An Architectural Family of Forward Thinkers

1. The Studio Origins
Studio founders Marlon and Meryati (Ati) Blackwell first connected over a shared interest in architecture and design that challenged conventions. Coming from different backgrounds, the two bonded over a shared love of architecture. Over time, Ati played a growing role in the studio's design work, ultimately becoming a partner at Marlon Blackwell Architects.
2. Teaching Practice
After studying in Europe, Marlon returned to the U.S. with a renewed perspective. He wanted to build his studio around a teaching practice. This vision led him to Fayetteville, where he was drawn to the quiet modernism of Northwest Arkansas. He and Ati chose to establish their practice there, where Marlon taught for years as a Distinguished Professor and the E. Fay Jones Chair in Architecture at the University of Arkansas, and several other institutions nationally and internationally.
3. Enduring Partnership
As they built their firm, Marlon and Ati also built a family, with each partnership informing the other. Today, the firm has grown into a dynamic team in Fayetteville, transforming the region’s overlooked vernacular into innovative architecture. With dozens of internationally recognized projects, Marlon and Ati, alongside their skilled team, have led the region’s architectural evolution while remaining committed to honoring place and context. Their influence spans the region, the nation, and the globe.
4. Value-driven Design
The studio’s deep knowledge of architectural tradition and interior design principles forms the foundation of a fully integrated practice. At the core of their work is a commitment to collaboration and a focus on people, finding solutions that meet needs without compromising style or originality.
