Cashiers, North Carolina, 1990

A 2300 sq. ft. residence for a middle-aged single woman and her elderly mother. The program called for a living/dining area, a kitchen, four bedrooms, two and a half baths, and a study. The site for this project is rocky, steep and thickly wooded with northern exposure, and panoramic views to the valley below and the mountains beyond. A 20’ high x 100’ long concrete block wall anchors the building to its site providing a formal datum between the manmade habitat and the wilderness beyond; all programmed spaces open on to and along the wall. Materials include fir timber structure, marine grade mahogany plywood, tin roofing and insulated concrete block.
